Agenda Did You Know Seborrheic dermatitis is a papulosquamous disorder patterned on the sebum-rich areas of the scalp, face, and trunk. When localized to the scalp, it is commonly referred to as dandruff. In addition to sebum, this dermatitis is linked to Malassezia, [1] immunologic abnormalities, and activation of complement. It is commonly aggravated by changes in humidity, changes in seasons, trauma (eg, scratching), or emotional stress. The severity varies from mild dandruff to exfoliative erythroderma. Seborrheic dermatitis may worsen in Parkinson disease and in AIDS. [21, 22]  Increased perspiration in Parkinson disease may be the link to seborrheic dermatitis.

FULL STORY Pregnancy Treatment for dermatitis caused by sea lice can include an antihistamine, such diphenhydramine, an over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream, calamine lotion, or an oatmeal bath.
Generally, dermatitis is diagnosed clinically, meaning based on the history and appearance of the rash. If possible, the exact type of dermatitis is delineated, but sometimes it is difficult to tell the difference between the dermatitis types. There are very few tests performed that help clarify the type of dermatitis. Some examples of tests that may help with the diagnosis are skin tests for contact or atopic dermatitis or a KOH test identifying a fungal infection.

Unfortunately, individuals can get shingles more than once, so recurrence is possible. Although more than two shingles outbreaks in a lifetime is rare, they are significant because they usually occur in people with multiple medical problems or increasingly weakened immune responses. Disease is quite uncommon in children younger than 2 years as opposed to congenital disorders of pigmentation, such as nevus depigmentosus.15 Onset before age 2 years represents 11% of pediatric-onset cases, 28% of cases start between 2 and 5 years, 40% of cases begin between 5 and 10 years, and 21% between 10 and 18 years, demonstrating that median age of onset is between 5 and 10 years of age.16 In a cohort of Indian children, 56.7% of pediatric cases were noted in childhood between 8 and 12 years.17 Early-onset disease (before age 12 years) represented 35.2% of cases in an Indian cohort.17 Children younger than 20 years represent 35.5% of patients in a Nigerian cohort18 and age of onset before 20 years of age was noted in 47.8% of patients in a Gujarati cohort.19 Mean age of onset can be as low as 6.9 years in Indian children 12 years and younger17 and as high as 17.4 years in an unselected Saudi Arabian mixed pediatric and adult population.20 Family history appears to be associated with earlier age of onset.21

The site of involvement should be taken into account for the choice between these different treatments. Hence, the European Dermatology Forum consensus group has recently published guidelines favoring the use of topical calcineurin inhibitors as a first-line option for face and neck on a bidaily basis, as these have fewer side effects in these particular areas.53

At first, this might cause a small spot, called a macule, that’s lighter in color than the skin around it. In time these white patches may spread and grow to cover a larger portion of the body. Sometimes these white patches spread quickly at first and then remain stable for years. Other times the spread is slower, occurring over a longer period of time.

Courtesy of Google, the only somewhat scientific explanation I later found was that altered pigmentation of the skin is usually brought about by our melanocytes destroying themselves within the comfort of our own bodies. For now, the doctor fidgeted with his ball point pen and spoke to us about topical creams, casually slipping in that there was currently no cure for the disorder — the last words I wanted to hear. Yet I was more concerned about the $300 check my parents were writing for the appointment, than my initial distaste with the doctor. During the moment when I needed the person with the degree to speak to me in a balance of scientific syntax and plain language, he was relatively mute and uneducated, as if this was the first time he spoke to someone “spotted.” I politely thanked him when the appointment was over and left the rubber-smelling cubicle.
To explain vitiligo, it helps to know a bit about how skin gets its color in the first place. Skin color is determined by cells called melanocytes. They produce a pigment called melanin, which gives skin its color and helps protect it from the sun.
Vitiligo may also run in families. Children whose parents have the disorder are more likely to develop vitiligo. However, most children will not get vitiligo even if a parent has it.
Quality measures Medical sources in the ancient world such as Hippocrates often did not differentiate between vitiligo and leprosy, often grouping these diseases together. In Arabic literature, the word “alabras” has been associated with vitiligo, with this word found in the Quran. The name “vitiligo” was first used by the Roman physician Aulus Cornelius Celsus in his classic medical text De Medicina.[30]

OUR MISSION Seborrheic Dermatitis Topics 2019 AAD election The mainstays of treatment for facial seborrheic dermatitis are topical antifungals, corticosteroids, and calcineurin inhibitors. Ketoconazole 2% is as effective as hydrocortisone 1% cream.22 Ketoconazole 2% gel (Xolegel) significantly reduced symptoms of erythema, pruritus, and scaling compared with vehicle alone.23 Ciclopirox appears to be better tolerated and more effective than ketoconazole 2% gel.24,25 Ciclopirox 1% cream (not available in the United States) was shown in a randomized, double-blinded trial to greatly reduce symptoms when used as a maintenance medication.24 Sertaconazole 2% cream (Ertaczo) was more effective than hydrocortisone 1% cream in one study.26 In light of their effectiveness, low adverse effect profile, and reasonable cost, topical antifungals are the preferred agents for acute and long-term treatment of seborrheic dermatitis of the face and body.3,14–16,22–26

Seborrheic dermatitis is a red, scaly, skin and scalp condition that affects both children and adults. The condition is extremely common. Estimates suggest that up to 3-5 % of the world is affected by the condition. Infants can be affected by seborrheic dermatitis, and this is typically called ‘cradle cap.’ During pre-pubertal years the incidence of seborrheic dermatitis reduces significantly until it spikes again in adolescence. Adults can be affected and the incidence increases again in the 60s and 70s.

Nummular Dermatitis Scaling of the skin on the scalp, eyebrows, forehead, ears, and beard area is typical. Some cases may also involve the central chest, underarms, groin, and around the belly button. In darker skinned patients, this scaling can have a flower-like shape (thus the term petaloid seborrheic dermatitis). Discoloration of the skin with lightening or darkening of affected areas may also occur. It is sometimes itchy. A dermatologist can determine if you have seborrheic dermatitis by clinical examination. In rare cases, a skin scraping or biopsy may be necessary to confirm the diagnosis or to rule out other explanations for your symptoms.

Dermatology Education WebMD Health Record Additional information Lithium. Diagnosis of scalp rashes Seborrheic dermatitis is thought to be caused by a variety of factors. However, central to all these factors is the presence of a yeast known as Malassezia and some local or systemic alteration in the immune system. Malazzesia yeast are thought to help metabolize certain types of fats in the skin from non irritating to irritating and inflammatory fatty acids that cause inflammation. It’s clear that getting rid of these yeast helps control the symptoms and signs of seborrheic dermatitis. Most individuals with seborrheic dermatitis have a healthy immune system. However, it’s clear that there is some alteration in the skin immune system that prevents these individuals from eradicating the Malazzesia yeast.
