Hair & Nail Conditions For mild seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp, over-the-counter dandruff shampoos containing selenium sulfide, zinc pyrithione, or coal tar can control symptoms at a fraction of the cost of other treatments.8,9,13 Tea tree oil shampoo may also decrease symptoms.9 For long-term control, antifungal shampoos containing ketoconazole 2% (Nizoral)3,14 or ciclopirox 1% (Loprox)15,16 can be used daily or at least two or three times per week for several weeks, until remission is achieved. Once-weekly use of these medicated shampoos can prevent relapse.14–17 These shampoos should remain on the hair for at least five minutes to guarantee adequate exposure to the scalp.9

Diseases: A-Z index The exact cause of seborrheic dermatitis is unknown, although genes and hormones play a role. Microorganisms such as yeast, that live on the skin naturally can also contribute to seborrheic dermatitis. Unlike many other forms of eczema, seborrheic dermatitis is not the result of an allergy.
Seborrheic dermatitis may go away without treatment. Or you may need many repeated treatments before the symptoms go away. And they may return later. Daily cleansing with a gentle soap and shampoo can help reduce oiliness and dead skin buildup.

Seborrheic dermatitis is a papulosquamous disorder patterned on the sebum-rich areas of the scalp, face, and trunk (see the image below). In addition to sebum, this dermatitis is linked to Malassezia, [1] immunologic abnormalities, and activation of complement. Its severity ranges from mild dandruff to exfoliative erythroderma.

  12. Initial therapy may include a medium-potency topical steroid (triamcinolone can be prescribed in a 1 pound jar) ointment applied to affected skin (avoiding facial skin) twice every day. The addition of the soak and smear method (soak in a warm water tub with no soap for 15-20 minutes; while still wet, apply the topical steroid, then dress in cotton pajamas and/or a vinyl sauna suit, preferably worn over damp cotton pajamas) will often speed improvement, as well as reduce pruritus dramatically. Patients must be cautious not to employ this modality for longer than 1-2 weeks to prevent side effects.
