Your doctor can prescribe medications that will help you manage shingles symptoms. Common symptoms of shingles include itching, a burning sensation, and pain. Doctors typically give antiviral drugs such as acyclovir, valacyclovir, or famcyclovir to help relieve these symptoms and limit their duration. Other steps doctors take to help manage shingle symptoms include using over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, as well as applying anti-itch lotion or cool compresses to blistered skin.

Antihistamines: An oral antihistamine such as Benadryl (diphenhydramine) may ease itching (but also causes drowsiness, so don’t take it when you need to be focused or drive). You also might try a topical antihistamine. For instance, Benadryl comes as a spray, cream, or stick for applying directly to the skin.

After a few days, a rash appears as a band or a patch of raised dots, usually on one side of the body. The rash can appear around the waistline or on one side of the face or the trunk (abdomen/back). The rash eventually develops into red, fluid-filled, round, painful blisters. Usually, these blisters begin to dry out within a few days or weeks.

  2. Anyone who’s had chickenpox can get shingles. After you’ve been infected with chickenpox, the varicella-zoster virus lies inactive in your body — mostly in spinal or cranial nerves — usually for many decades. If the virus reactivates, it can travel along nerve pathways to your skin and cause a rash to erupt.
Most people will only get shingles once in their life. The pain and the rash resolve in 3 to 5 weeks, and the blisters don’t leave scars. There are a few complications that can occur.
Somewhere between 1 and 5 days after the tingling or burning feeling on the skin, a red rash will appear.

Shingles is not contagious. If you are exposed to someone with shingles, you will not get the virus as long as you have had chicken pox, McGeer continues. However, if you’ve never had chicken pox and are exposed to someone with shingles, you may come down with the childhood disease. These are the 11 signs of shingles you might be ignoring.
To be on the safe side, if you’ve never had chickenpox, it’s best to avoid contact with the active rash of anyone with shingles or chickenpox.

Currently, PHN cannot be prevented in all patients. However, prompt medical treatment for shingles can lessen the duration of shingles and lower the risk for PHN. Specifically, the effectiveness of antiviral medication (acyclovir, famciclovir or valaciclovir) is well established if it is taken within 72 hours after the appearance of the shingles rash.
