Staff Find a Dermatologist As noted above, the white spots of tinea versicolor tends to linger even after successful treatment. This persistent discoloration often leads people to think that the condition is still present long after it has been eradicated. It may take months for skin color to blend and look normal, but it always does. The red or brown variety of rash, on the other hand, clears up much sooner. It is, therefore, a good idea to have the condition treated as soon as new spots appear so that any discoloration lasts as short a time as possible.

I used the Ketoconazole shampoo every day for a week, then once a week for a month. And it helped tremendously. It stopped the spreading down my stomach and back, making this summer the first time I’ve had clear skin for a full season. Although there is still a faint discoloration, I’m really the only one who can tell it’s there. There’s no one asking what’s going on when I wear a V-neck. No pointing children, and I no longer hide under big necklaces.
Oral antifungal agents, itraconazole and fluconazole, are used to treat pityriasis versicolor when extensive or if topical agents have failed. Oral terbinafine, an antifungal agent used to treat dermatophyte infections, is not effective for malassezia infections such as pityriasis versicolor.

Tinea versicolor is caused by a type of fungus that is found on almost everyone’s skin. It’s not clear exactly why the fungus grows and causes visible patches in some people but not in others. Tinea versicolor has nothing to do with poor hygiene, and it’s not contagious.
Tinea versicolor is a fungal infection that leads to a change (darker or lighter) in color in areas on the skin. One may notice round to oval spots, with fine dust-like scaling as well as mild itching. In severe tinea versicolor, the spots can coalesce to form patches. The fungus that causes tinea versicolor is normally present on human skin and usually poses no problems. Many factors, including warm and humid climates, can increase the risk of developing tinea versicolor.

Oral antifungals including ketoconazole or fluconazole in a single dose, or ketoconazole for seven days, or itraconazole can be used.[17][18] The single-dose regimens, or pulse therapy regimens, can be made more effective by having the patient exercise 1–2 hours after the dose, to induce sweating. The sweat is allowed to evaporate, and showering is delayed for a day, leaving a film of the medication on the skin.[19]
