However, these causes are not confirmed.

Discomfort when chewing or speaking | Lichen Sclerosus A questionnaire (Tables 1 and 2)16,17 was used to assess mouth dryness and its severity in the two groups. Patients not eliminated by the exclusion criteria, and who gave a minimum of three positive answers to questions in Table 1, were included in the case group. Subjects with no positive responses were recruited as controls. (A minimum of three positive responses was required because questions 2 and 9 are not specific to xerostomia, and may be seen in some other conditions18).
Alzheimer’s and Aging Brains author interview icon The Lecturio Medical Online Library There is limited data on how many people are affected by LP, but most studies estimate that LP occurs in less than 1 percent of the world’s population. Cutaneous LP occurs at similar frequencies in men and women, but women are somewhat more likely to develop oral LP or lichen planopilaris. There does not appear to be a racial predisposition for the disease. The majority of LP develops between 30 and 60 years of age but can affect older and younger individuals as well. In rare cases, children may be affected.

It is not a form of cancer. Visit Our Smile Gallery Research article Lichen planus is a relatively common inflammatory disease that affects the skin and/or inside the mouth, resulting in distinctive skin and/or oral lesions. Lichen planus of the skin usually causes itching. There seems to be a relationship between the oral form and the skin form of lichen planus. Almost half of those with the oral version also have skin lesions. The onset may be gradual or quick, but the exact cause of the inflammation that leads to lichen planus is not yet fully understood. It is important to note that lichen planus itself is not an infectious disease. Therefore, this disease is not passed from one person to another by any means. Lichen planus is not a type of cancer.

Get Whiter Teeth Nails: Lichen planus may appear on some or all of your fingernails and toenails. Thinning, ridges, splitting and nail loss are signs of the condition. There are some limitations to our study. First, the method that we used, 2D-PAGE followed by LC-MS/MS, might not provide the sensitivity of other recent techniques, such as MALDI-TOF or surface-enhanced laser desorption/ionization (SELDI)-TOF, both followed by LC/MS/MS [7, 42]. It has been shown that platforms based on 2D electrophoresis are affected by poor reproducibility; to avoid bias, it is often necessary to run multiple replicates of the same sample [42]. In our study, we first performed 2D-PAGE in five pairs of saliva samples from patients and controls; we found non-redundant protein spots that were differentially expressed in each pair of gels. Hence, we decided to pool saliva samples and again perform 2D-PAGE in triplicate then we chose the best pair of gels for LC-MS/MS. Moreover, it has been suggested that the best method for robust biomarker identification is analysis of multiple samples using different proteomic methodologies [7, 43]. We are currently performing shotgun proteomic analyses on saliva samples of OLP patients and comparing these with saliva from healthy control participants; we expect confirmation of whether these proteins can reliably serve as potential markers for OLP.
Lichenoid disorders Salivary alpha amylase levels were higher in the morning in patients with OLP compared to control subjects. However, in the evening these levels were lower in OLP subjects than control subjects [58].

Nature Communications To collect stimulated saliva, patients were requested to chew equal pieces of mastic gum for one minute and then throw it out, swallow their saliva and spit into a vial. Next, 5cc of blood were also drawn from each patient. Saliva collection in patients was done after confirming their diagnosis, and prior to initiation of treatment.

Authors’ contributions + Trichotillomania RANTES (Regulated on Activation, Normal T-cell Expressed and Secreted) is a member of the CC chemokine family which plays a critical role in the recruitment of lymphocytes and mast cells in OLP. CCR1, CCR3, CCR4, CCR5, CCR9 and CCR10, which are cell surface receptors for RANTES, have been identified in lichen planus.[1,10] The recruited mast cell undergoes degranulation under the influence of RANTES, which releases chymase and TNF-α. These substances upregulate RANTES secretion by OLP lesional T cells. This again sets in a vicious cycle which relates to the chronic nature of the disease.[10]

Second-line therapy All Subjects All Subjects Bolivia Publisher’s Note Lichen planus is a chronic inflammatory disease of unknown origin that is characterized by different types of lesions involving the skin and mucosa in middle-aged individuals. The most common lesions are purple papules with well-demarcated, irregular borders, which typically occur on the wrists, lower extremities, and genitoanal region. The surfaces of the lesions often exhibit a pattern of white lines known as Wickham’s striae. The disease is diagnosed clinically, but may be confirmed through dermoscopy and punch biopsies. Biopsy also helps detect squamous cell carcinoma, a possible complication of genital lichen planus. Treatment primarily consists of high-dose topical steroids, but may also include oral steroids and phototherapy in cases of extensive or steroid-refractory disease.

The reticular form is often asymptomatic. Lesions are fine, reticulated, white patches and plaques most commonly overlying the buccal mucosa. This is the most common form of oral LP. The erythematous subtype also includes atrophic lesions.
