Leadership Institute Author Center Vitiligo causes white patches on your skin. It can also affect your eyes, mouth, and nose. It occurs when the cells that give your skin its color are destroyed. No one knows what destroys them. It is more common in people with autoimmune diseases, and it might run in families. It usually starts before age 40.

Click Here and be the first to comment on this article The only sign of vitiligo is the presence of pale patchy areas of depigmented skin which tend to occur on the extremities.[6][7] Some people may experience itching before a new patch occurs.[8] The patches are initially small, but often grow and change shape.[6][9] When skin lesions occur, they are most prominent on the face, hands and wrists.[6][7] The loss of skin pigmentation is particularly noticeable around body orifices, such as the mouth, eyes, nostrils, genitalia and umbilicus.[6][7] Some lesions have increased skin pigment around the edges.[10] Those affected by vitiligo who are stigmatized for their condition may experience depression and similar mood disorders.[11]
As an 18 year-old college freshman living in New York, I continue to search for more answers about the condition. However, I am no longer seeking a way to fix it. The past year has forced me to grow, along with Winnie Harlow and the 50 million bodies actively exhibiting the disorder. I now throw myself into new experiences as much as I can and choose to view my insecurity and discomfort with my body as only a segment of the self I used to cover up. I have been with my boyfriend for over a year and owe a good part of my self-assurance to the confidence he instills in me. He loves the marks. To others, my condition may be seen as an unfortunate abnormality, but it isn’t up to me to prove them wrong. It is up to me to accept myself, spotted or not.

The change in appearance caused by vitiligo can affect a person’s emotional and psychological well-being and may create difficulty in becoming or remaining employed. People with this disorder can experience emotional stress, particularly if vitiligo develops on visible areas of the body, such as the face, hands, arms, feet, or on the genitals. Participating in a vitiligo support group may improve social coping skills and emotional resilience.[37]

Sunscreen. Use a good sunscreen every day. Because vitiligo spots have no melanin, they can’t tan. If the skin isn’t protected with sunscreen, vitiligo patches may burn or scar. Getting a tan on the rest of your body will only highlight the white patches, especially if you have light skin.

Milia: What you need to know Milia, or milium cysts, are common in newborn children but can also affect adults. They are small, white spots that appear on the skin. They often appear on the face of a newborn. Sometimes, they affect adults, too. Regular skin care is recommended, and the spots usually go away in time. Do not pinch or scrub them. Read now

Some of the earliest documents describing this condition go as far back as 3,000 years ago, some of which are found in Egyptian and Vedic texts. The only problem is that there is no clear contrast between vitiligo and leprosy during those ages, which led to the shunning of people with vitiligo from society because of the collective fear.1

The typical vitiligo macule is chalk white in color, has convex margins (as if the white areas were flowing into normally pigmented skin), is 5mm to 5cm or more in diameter, and is round, oval, or elongated in shape. Linear or artifactual macules represent the isomorphic or “Koebner” phenomenon, following repeated trauma or pressure on the elbows, knees, and bony prominences. The disease progresses by gradual enlargement of individual macules and the development of new white spots on various parts of the body.
