Neurodermatitis is a chronic, severely pruritic disorder characterized by 1 or more lichenified plaques in which the skin is thickened and there are accentuated skin markings. It affects adults, predominantly from ages 30 to 50 years. Women are affected more commonly than men. It may lead to demoralization, sleep disturbances, anxiety, depression, obsessive‐compulsive disorder, and distress through its impact on the patient's well‐being (Burgin, 2008). If the patient suffers from psychologic problems, the lesions are more likely to be persistent (Stander and Metze, 2009). Whether emotional factors are secondary to the primary dermatologic disease or they are primary and causative (altering perception of itch) is unclear. It has been postulated that neurotransmitters that affect mood, such as dopamine, serotonin, and opioid peptides, modulate perception of itch via descending spinal pathways (Burgin, 2008). 3. In addition to the suggested triggers, neurodermatitis appears to be associated with certain other skin conditions. Skin diseases such as psoriasis, eczema and dry skin have all been implicated in the pathogenesis. Individuals with a personal or family history of such conditions have an increased predisposition to developing LSC, especially if they are females, between the third and fifth decades of life.

One patient with neurodermatitis answered 3 questions and 1 patient with psoriasis vulgaris answered 2 questions. One patient with psoriasis did not list the age and 2 did not specify the gender. Table Table11 shows the demographic characteristics of both groups. Mean ages were 37.97 ± 14.45 (range 18-83, median 35) and 34.33 ± 13.84 (range 16-80, median 32) years for patients with neurodermatitis and psoriasis, respectively. The disease duration ranged from 0.03 to 480 months (mean 32.27, median 12) for patients with neurodermatitis, while the counterpart ranged from 0.5 to 552 months (mean 75.64, median 36). The two groups were matched for gender and age. The disease groups differed significantly in employment status, educational level, address, duration and age.
