Global Medical Knowledge 52 NIH Clinical Center Mucous membranes: Lichen planus of the mucous membranes of the mouth and genitals is common. It appears as a white, lacy rash on the inside of the cheeks or the vagina and may not cause symptoms. The oral rash often occurs prior to any skin involvement. More troublesome, although rare, is erosive lichen planus, which can be quite sore and uncomfortable. This erosive form typically causes the patient to complain of the shallow and often quite painful, recurrent ulcers in the mouth or genitals. Lichen planus of the female genitalia can involve the external vulvar mucosa and the internal vaginal mucosa. There is an association with cancer in these areas, so both the oral and vaginal tissues need to monitored by a medical professional.

+ Special forms of blue nevi The white streaks do not go away. In all, 50 – 70% of patients have oral lesions. These lesions can be whitish papules or plaques and/or white striae. They generally do not ulcerate, but this may occur due to epitheliomatous transformation. In women, sometimes, lichen planus manifests as desquamative inflammatory vaginitis.
Lichen planus can be distinguished from eczema, psoriasis, and other common rashes purely on the basis of its clinical appearance in that lesions are small bumps or aggregations of bumps that are flat-topped, shiny, polygonal, and purple to grey in color. They tend to occur at the wrists and elbows and ankles. Individual papules contain thin white lines called Wickham’s striae. When lichen planus involves mucosal tissues, such as the lips or cheeks, these white filmy, web-like lines are easy to detect. It is not unusual for lichen planus to appear at sites of trauma, especially along lines of scratches (excoriations).
It has been my good fortune to be able to report this extremely rare and interesting case. The rarity of the disease and the multiform character of the lesions are of sufficient interest in themselves. In addition, the case serves as a corroboration to one of the conclusions reached in a previous article,1 namely, that lichen planus and lichen acuminatus are closely related to one another. One of the arguments on which this conclusion is based is the comparative frequency with which the two diseases occur at the same time in the same person.

Nail changes may occur in lichen planus. The majority of nail changes result from damage to the nail matrix, or nail root. Usually only a few fingernails or toenails are involved, but occasionally all nails are affected. Nail changes associated with lichen planus include longitudinal ridging and grooving, splitting, thinning and nail loss. In severe cases, pterygium may develop and the nail may be temporarily or permanently destroyed.

Athlete’s foot, or tinea pedis (say: TIN-ee-uh PEH-dus), is a common skin infection that is caused by a fungus (say: FUN-guss). This fungus eats old skin cells. And plenty of them can be found on the feet!
Avoiding walking barefoot combined with good foot hygiene can help reduce the spread of the fungus. Feet should be washed every day with soap and water and thoroughly dried, including between the toes. Feet should be kept as dry as possible. If your feet sweat a lot you may need to change your socks during the day. Antifungal powders, sprays and/or creams are often used to treat athlete’s foot. Your foot and ankle surgeon will recommend the best treatment for you.

The medical name for fungal athlete’s foot is tinea pedis. There are a variety of fungi that cause athlete’s foot, and these can be contracted in many locations, including gyms, locker rooms, swimming pools, communal showers, nail salons, and from contaminated socks and clothing. The fungi can also be spread directly from person to person by contact. Most people acquire fungus on the feet from walking barefoot in areas where someone else with athlete’s foot has recently walked. Some people are simply more prone to this condition while others seem relatively resistant to it. Another colorful name for this condition is “jungle rot,” often used by members of the armed services serving in tropical climates.

Water can be one of the best forms of eczema therapy — but only if you bathe or shower properly Clothing & Fabrics WebMD Medical Reference
Moisturizers are classified based on the amount of oil and water they contain. The more oil in a moisturizer, the better it usually is at treating eczema. The best moisturizers to use are the ones that feel “greasy” (ointments and creams), because they contain more oil. These are very effective at keeping moisture in and irritants out.
If you use a prescription topical medication, apply it as directed, before you moisturize. Corticosteroid pills, liquids, or shots. These powerful drugs help relieve symptoms of severe or hard-to-treat eczema. Because of the risk for side effects such as skin damage and bone loss, you should take them only for a short time.
Facebook Bathing and moisturizing Use a measuring cup to get the exact amount of bleach needed and then add it to the water. Too much bleach may irritate the child’s skin and too little may not help eczema symptoms.
Immunosuppressants Corticosteroid creams, solutions, foams, and ointments. These treatments made with hydrocortisone steroids can quickly relieve itching and reduce inflammation. They come in different strengths, from mild over-the-counter (OTC) treatments to stronger prescription medicines.
Corporate Policy UV light therapy. In a dermatologist’s office, your skin gets exposed to UVA rays, UVB rays, or a mix of both. Sometimes you’ll rub coal tar on your skin at the same time. You’ll have sessions two to five times a week, depending on the type of treatment you get.

Creams are second to ointments in the amount of oil they contain and are also very good at sealing in moisture. Because they contain less oil, they are also less greasy to the touch. Be sure to read labels carefully — creams sometimes contain stabilizers or preservatives that can irritate your skin.

Seborrheic dermatitis is a common skin condition in infants, adolescents, and adults. The characteristic symptoms—scaling, erythema, and itching—occur most often on the scalp, face, chest, back, axilla, and groin. Seborrheic dermatitis is a clinical diagnosis based on the location and appearance of the lesions. The skin changes are thought to result from an inflammatory response to a common skin organism, Malassezia yeast. Treatment with antifungal agents such as topical ketoconazole is the mainstay of therapy for seborrheic dermatitis of the face and body. Because of possible adverse effects, anti-inflammatory agents such as topical corticosteroids and calcineurin inhibitors should be used only for short durations. Several over-the-counter shampoos are available for treatment of seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp, and patients should be directed to initiate therapy with one of these agents. Antifungal shampoos (long-term) and topical corticosteroids (short-term) can be used as second-line agents for treatment of scalp seborrheic dermatitis.

JN Learning Store Apps Jobs Institutions Reprints & Permissions Allergy Guide Lichen simplex chronicus (LSC) (also known as neurodermatitis[1]) is a skin disorder characterized by chronic itching and scratching.[2] The constant scratching causes thick, leathery, darkened, (lichenified) skin. This condition is associated with many factors, including the scratch-itch cycle, psychological stressors, and atopy. LSC is more common between ages 35 and 50 and is seen approximately twice as often in women compared to men.[3]

Recently, methylchloroisothiazolinone/methylisothiazolinone, a preservative found in some moist toilet papers, has been identified as an allergen in anogenital dermatitis.

The cycle of itching and scratching causes the skin to thicken and become scaly. The challenge in treating neurodermatitis is to break this cycle.
