tinea faciei | tinea versicolor treatment shampoo

Skin Conditions Resources What is tinea versicolor? – To minimize or prevent recurrences, patients should avoid application of topical oils and may apply ketoconazole shampoo 2% or selenium sulfide shampoo or lotion 2.5% to all susceptible areas for 10 minutes prior to bathing once a month. Patients may also use zinc pyrithione (ZNP Bar) soap once or twice a week when bathing.
Marion B. Sulzberger Award and Lectureship Cite this page Tinea versicolor is more common in males than females. It is most common in the teens and 20s than in younger and older individuals. These risk factors likely have to do with age and hormonally related variations in the natural skin oils. There are quantitative and qualitative changes in natural skin oils with puberty that gradually subside with age. Some have noticed that the condition worsens in hot and humid environments and seasons, something seen with most yeast and fungal infections. Worldwide it is quite common in hot, humid environments and is rare in dry northern nations.
Nonmelanoma Skin Cancer (NMSC) Medicated cleansers: Tinea versicolor often returns, especially when a person lives in a place that is warm and humid. Using a medicated cleanser once or twice a month, especially during warm and humid periods, can prevent the yeast from overgrowing again.
Tinea versicolor is caused by fungus of the Malassezia spp. (formerly known as Pityrosporum). Since this fungus is normally present on the skin’s surface, it is NOT contagious. The two most common species in tinea versicolor are M globosa and M furfur.

Clinical Cases Although tinea versicolor is recurrent for some patients and, therefore, a chronic disease, the condition remains treatable with the available remedies (see Medical Care and Medication). Thus, the prognosis is excellent and new treatments continue to be developed. [22]

There are a variety of fungi that cause athlete’s foot, and these can be contracted in many locations, including gyms, locker rooms, swimming pools, communal showers, nail salons, and from contaminated socks and clothing. The fungi can also be spread directly from person to person by contact. Most people acquire fungus on the feet from walking barefoot in areas where someone else with athlete’s foot has recently walked. Some people are simply more prone to this condition while others seem relatively resistant to it. Another colorful name for this condition is “jungle rot,” often used by members of the armed services serving in tropical climates.

Because of the teratogenic potential and long-term retention of acitretin in the body, women who use it must not be pregnant and should be warned against becoming pregnant for at least 2 yr after treatment ends.
