Cross-sensitization means that exposure to one substance can result in an allergic response after exposure to a different but related substance. Toxicodendron sp plants (eg, poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac) account for a large percentage of ACD, including moderate and severe cases. The offending allergen is urushiol.

Dermatitis simply means skin inflammation, but it embraces a range of ailments. In most people, the early stages of dermatitis are characterized by red, dry, and itchy skin. More serious dermatitis may result in crusty scales, painful cracks, or blisters that ooze fluid. Since many things can irritate the skin, a doctor will try to narrow the diagnosis to a specific category of dermatitis, even though treatment is similar for most types of skin irritation and inflammation.

Getting treatment for dermatitis can prove a challenge, and must first start with identifying the contributing factors. Treatment will therefore vary among individuals, and may involve a combination of home remedies and medications. Some of the typical options include the use of antihistamines, antibiotics, corticosteroid creams, emollients, and phototherapy.

Changes like those of lichen simplex chronicus may be superimposed on other dermatoses such as lichen planus (hypertrophic lichen planus), mycosis fungoides, actinic reticuloid, and eczematous dermatitides including atopic dermatitis. These changes are particularly prominent in some solar keratoses of the hands or forearms.

Here’s some information to help you get ready for your appointment. J Allergy Clin Immunol. 2001; 108: 455-462 Neurodermatitis, also known as lichen simplex chronicus, is a common chronic skin disease, affecting up to 12% of the total population, and women are more affected than men1. The disease is characterized by lichenificated plaque as a result of excessive scratching. Neck, elbow, ankles, vulva, eyelid even faces are the most common affected sites. Although neurodermatitis is not life-threatening, it can produce an important psychosocial burden. It has been suggested that patients with neurodermatitis suffer from depression, anxiety and other treatable psychological disorders2. Negative emotional states are the main personality component of patients (greater tendency to pain avoidance, greater dependency on other peoples’ desires, and more conforming and dutiful)3. Patients with neurodermatitis tend to have poor social skills or interpersonal resources and a lack of flexibility. Neurodermatitis may be associated with sleep disturbance and sexual dysfunction4. All these data constitute a growing body of evidence indicating a negative impact of neurodermatitis on patients’ quality of life (QoL).

Info for Advertisers Neurodermatitis: Symptoms CVS dermatologic formulary restrictions Factors affecting skin barrier function might influence the risk of atopic dermatitis (AD). Previous reports have suggested higher rates of AD in areas with so-called hard water and among children born in fall or winter. This study looked for a possible synergistic relationship between these two AD risk factors. The researchers analyzed data on nearly 53,000 children from the Danish National Birth Cohort. National data sources were used to gather birth data and information on domestic water hardness, which differs across Danish regions. Physician diagnosis of AD and other characteristics were assessed in parental interviews when the children were 6 and 18 months old. Overall prevalence of AD was 15.0%. Prevalence ranged from 13.5% to 17.1% in regions with the softest versus hardest domestic water; relative prevalence of AD increased by 5% per 5-degree increase in water hardness. Hard water accounted for an estimated 2% of the population risk of AD. Relative prevalence of AD was 24% higher for children born in fall and 18% higher for those born in winter. There was no evidence of interaction between season of birth and water hardness. Both hard domestic water and fall/winter birth are associated with a higher prevalence of AD in early childhood. Risk of AD increases along with degree of water hardness, but there is no synergistic interaction between these two risk factors. Further studies are needed to see if water softening can reduce AD risk in infants.

Next Article > In healthy individuals, balance exists between important subsets of T cells (eg, Th1, Th2, Th17, Th22). The primary immune dysfunction hypothesis invokes an imbalance in the T cell subsets, with Th2 cells predominating; this results in the production of type 2 cytokines such as interleukin (IL)–4, IL-5, and IL-13, causing an increase in IgE from plasma cells. Later, in persons with chronic AD, the Th1 cells have been shown to predominate. More recently, Th17 cells have been found to be elevated in patients with AD. [9] Although primarily considered a Th2 cell‒associated cytokine-mediated disease, the precise contributions of Th1 and Th17 cell responses remain to be fully defined.

In order to clarify the possible association between the oxidative stress and OLP pathogenesis, measurement of antioxidants and oxidants in saliva of patients suffering from this disease is increasing in the last years [8]. Saliva offers several advantages over serum as a diagnostic fluid: its collection is noninvasive and very easy, and sample collection can be repeated indefinitely. Recently, alterations in total antioxidant status (TAS) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) were described in saliva of patients with OLP when compared with healthy controls [8]. However, knowledge about the behavior of analytes related to oxidative stress in saliva is lacking [7].

Lichen planus is a condition that forms an itchy rash on the skin or in the mouth. Diet, Food & Fitness Halitosis – oral malodour A 69-year-old female patient presented multiple intraoral lesions located bilaterally in tongue, buccal mucosa, floor of the mouth, and gums with a clinical evolution of three months (Figure 1). According to clinical classification [5], and the definition of OLP by the World Health Organization, reticular and plaque subtypes alternating with erythematous/ ulcerative subtype were observed (Figure 1). Low pain symptom was related. The personal pathological history revealed: hepatitis type B suffered at 6-years-old. However, Hepatitis B serologic test was performed at 51-years-old with a negative result. Since 1997, OLP was diagnosed with three to four periods of remission and exacerbation. The patient underwent myocardial infarction at 62-years-old, treated with a coronary stent implantation and acetylsalicylic acid, which was suspended one week before the biopsies were taken. Hypercholesterolemia was treated with atorvastatin calcium. Four months before symptoms of GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) were presented, insomnia caused by emotional problems was treated with clonazepam and alprazolam.

Table 1 shows the distribution of xerostomia in terms of severity of xerostomia and any diurnal variations in the patient group with OLP/OLL and stomatitis and the healthy control group. Expectedly, the patients had significantly more complaints of xerostomia and more severe xerostomia than the healthy control subjects (p < 0.001). However, there were no differences in the frequency of xerostomia between patients with OLP, OLL and stomatitis, and patients with and without a concomitant contact allergy (p = 0.30). There were no associations between the presence and severity of xerostomia and age, gender, number of medical conditions/diseases, including allergies, or the number of medications taken on a daily basis. More female patients than male patients reported xerostomia, but the majority of the study population also comprised women. 28.6% of the patients reported that they experienced their taste perception to be different from normal, primarily as a decreased or an altered taste perception. My dentist just diagnosed me with lichen planus after two medical doctors didn't know what it was. Both doctors gave me a viral cream, which didn't even touch it. When I first got this, it started with my lips swelling. Then I could feel little blisters forming on the inside bottom lip. Some formed inside my top lip as well. My bottom lip developed a deep ridge and was very raw to the point of bleeding. I was putting a triple antibiotic ointment on my lips at night hoping it would cure it. It only soothed it as did Vaseline. It lasts about three weeks when it comes. It will get better, and the ridge will go away, but it isn't gone very long when it begins again. I have to be careful and not burn my lips on hot food or beverages as this will set it off. My lips also will get very dry and don't seem to absorb any moisture from the Vaseline. The rash will also get on the outside rim of my bottom lip. There's not a cure, so the only thing I can do is to keep applying Vaseline and Blistex on my lips. Having lichen planus also affects the tip of my tongue, altering the taste of food. I have had it inside my cheek and on the side of my tongue, which is white and red with bumps. EQUIPO DRA. Seborrheic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory dermatologic condition that usually appears on areas of the body with a large density of sebaceous glands, such as the scalp, face, chest, back, axilla, and groin. Although it can be associated with human immunodeficiency virus infection and neurologic disease (e.g., cerebrovascular event, Parkinson disease),1 seborrheic dermatitis typically occurs in healthy persons. Its prevalence is 1% to 3% in the general population and 34% to 83% in immunocompromised persons.2 It has a bimodal distribution, with peaks at two to 12 months of age and in adolescence and early adulthood.2 It is more common in men and is typically more severe in cold and dry climates and during periods of increased stress.3

After just a few weeks we discovered that the treatment wiped out the memory cells from the mouse skin, allowing the brown pigment to return in a spotty pattern, just as we see in patients who respond to therapy. Importantly, just two weeks of antibody treatments caused repigmentation that lasted for months, suggesting this strategy, unlike existing treatments, might provide long-term benefit for vitiligo patients.

Generally, the diagnosis can be accurately made during a physical examination without the benefit of any further laboratory support.
Trichrome vitiligo Unfortunately, the spots grew more noticeable over the years. After further research and personal analysis, I learned that the disorder did have one consistent trait: symmetry. The imperfections mimicked one another on each half of my body. Elbows, knees, underarms, feet, inner thighs, wrists were now invaded with the abnormality. My olive skin was tarnished. The splotches were pure white and resembled kaleidoscopic images. They were delicate in appearance, popping up without warning or consent, choosing the specific place in which they would like to exist. Every night, I searched online for an explanation. I became a victim to the columns of questions with response boxes left unanswered. There wasn’t an explanation for my condition; there were suggested treatments — treatments like topical creams and PUVA laser. Medical sources encouraged me to stay out of the sun completely, ironic because I lived in the sunniest state in the country. As the blemishes grew more noticeable, I was more susceptible to telling white lies. People would ask constantly, “What is that on your elbow?” “You have something on your arm.” I would reply with “birthmark,” which made much more sense to me then than it does now. With every new confrontation, I crawled sheepishly back inside myself, losing a bit of my identity each time.
